Postpartum depression affects between 12% and 20% of women within the first year following delivery. Undiagnosed and untreated depression places women at increased risk for illness and interpersonal and psychosocial difficulties. In addition, children of depressed women have high rates of anxiety, disruptive and depressive disorders that begin early in life and often continue into adult life.
